![]() ![]() You need 1.5 hydroponic basins per colonist being fed and you'll need ~30% as many meals per colonist stockpiled, so keep that in mind when calculating this out. This only works if the reduced meal stockpile is worth more than the hydroponics you're making though. ![]() If you're trying to maintain a low colony wealth, in a mid-size colony you can maintain a smaller meal stockpile using hydroponics as food can be grown, cooked, and consumed almost immediately, reducing the necessary buffer if you're growing using soil. If you don't want to expand out too far from a central base or just lack dirt for whatever reason then you want hydroponics. Fewer farmers to feed larger colonies, basically. The OTHER problem is that when I limit the radius for the refinery bill, its saying theres no usable material. Problem is the refinery wont take the rice when its harvested. Hydroponics require the same amount of work and time input to feed 1 colonist, but distribute that labor more efficiently over time, reducing frontloaded sowing and harvesting workloads and allowing farmers to feed more people. As it is set up now, the biofuel has a bill set to just take in rice, and thats what Im growing in the hydroponic bin and just outside the base. I fiddled around with it for a bit until I found a pretty efficient layout with only 8 squares of. If your farmers are overwhelmed with growing and harvesting, you have very little arable land, or if you're trying to maintain a smaller stockpile of food to maintain lower wealth then hydroponics are better. Hey I know this post is a year old but this was the first result on google for 'Rimworld Biolab sun lamp setup' so I've decided to share my layout here :) As u/FaceDeer pointed out the radius around the lamp is bigger than what's shown in game. As Jigain said you need a sunlamp for hydroponics to work at all, so it's not a situation of one or the other.
